In Particular, this paper examines the difference between the mainstream theatre practitioner on the one hand, and the academic theatre practitioner on other. In West Bengal, as well as in India, the mainstream theatre practitioners are known as ‘theatre workers’ in general. This article attempts to analysis the question of identity of the academic theatre practitioners through a comparative analysis of both the streams in post-independence (1947) Bengali theatre.
